We are seeking to employ a research assistant on a short-term contract (two weeks or 80 hours of work) who would conduct a review of the literature on employee-owned organisations. This work is part of the project conducted by Dr Anna Zueva and Dr Martyn Griffin in the Organisation Studies Research Cluster in the Sheffield University Management School. The literature review needs to be completed by the 31st of July, 2025.
This job is a starting point in a project that will explore the relationship between democratic organising in employee-owned organisations and the capitalist environment in which such organisations operate.
Job Objectives:
- To summarise the current knowledge on the relationship between democratic organising and decision-making in employee-owned enterprises and capitalist/market structures.
- To outline the key theoretical perspectives informing research in the area.
- To identify potential factors that may affect the relationship between democratic organising and the market environment (e.g. nature of business, organisation size, institutional environment, decision-making structures, etc.)
Job Tasks:
1. To locate and summarise relevant publications in management, economics, politics and social science journals.
2. To produce a summary of the read literature in a table format.
3. To produce a very brief report on the key answers to the questions above.
About You:
The ideal candidate for this job is a current doctoral student in the second or third year of study. You should have a substantial experience of reading and summarising academic literature, especially through undergraduate and master’s final degree projects and through reviewing literature for your doctoral work. You should have substantial experience of reading business and management literature, however we will consider candidates from related disciplines such as sociology, economics and political science.
Job Process and Support:
- The job involves 80 hours of work. You can choose to complete them in two regular working weeks or spread them over a longer period of time as long as the tasks are completed by the 31st of July, 2025.
- You will be briefed by the project leads prior to starting your work and debriefed on completion.
- You will have access to the project leads throughout your work and regular support check-ins will be scheduled.
Pay Rate: £17.34 + holiday pay entitlement per hour
