Involvement in the AMRC’s Integrated Manufacturing Group is a fantastic opportunity to influence the way products are being manufactured and to develop innovative solutions towards industrial problems in the UK. You will deal directly with some of the most advanced technologies and companies in the world, such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Spirit AeroSystems, and GKN Aerospace, as well as diverse industries beyond aerospace.
As an Assistant Project Engineer or Assistant Software Developer, you will work alongside Project Engineers, Senior Software Developers, Technical Leads, and others on a diverse range of projects. You will work with cutting edge technology to solve real problems, dealing directly with customers and other external stakeholders.
For this role, you will need to have a passion for one or more of the Integrated Manufacturing Group’s core capabilities, which include IIoT, machine learning and AI, automation, mechanical design, data science, HMI technology (including AR/VR), connectivity (including cyber security), and process simulation.
You are expected to:
- Have experience of at least one of the following areas:
- CAD
- Complex mechanical system design
- Robots and/or controls hardware
- ROS
- Instrumentation
- Process / Machine monitoring
- AI / Machine Learning / Data Science
- Control systems and Software
- Networks and connectivity
- AR/VR development (Unity)
- Digital twins
- Software development and script-based programming e.g. Python, Java, C++/C#, or other
- Web development
- Cyber security
- Be able to assess and solve technical challenges while working independently and/or as part of a team.
- Have good organisational skills and time management skills such as planning personal workload effectively, as well as checking progress against a project plan.
- Be able to adapt to new technical challenges and be confident working on novel applications that are out of your comfort zone.
- Be an effective communicator, and able to demonstrate communication skills and team working experience.
This post is only for current students studying a STEM-related university degree at a UK university, who will be returning to study after the placement is complete. You must NOT be in your final year of study.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and undertake the research and development necessary to achieve project aims.
- Continuously monitor and check progress against project milestones and targets.
- Co-ordinate and liaise with industrial collaborators to agree project deliverables and update on project progress.
- Co-ordinate and liaise with suppliers to ensure all project equipment is available for set timescales.
- Work closely with the IMG team to deliver quality solutions.
- Report project deliverables, both written and verbally to the team and to customers.
- Ensure all processes comply with The AMRC’s quality standards.
- Research novel technology and its application through into industry to support new technology implementation in manufacturing.
- Communicate with customers around Research & Development activities.
Terms and conditions of employment: Will be those for Grade 3 staff.
Salary for this grade: £12.83 per hour plus holiday entitlement
Equivalent to £14.38 per hour, working 35 hours per week (equivalent to ££23,414 per annum.)
Start date and duration: this post is a casual vacancy starting nominally on the 14th July for a minimum of 8 weeks. (Exact start/end dates are flexible, as is placement duration)
