About this Role
We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to support an innovative research project on urban heat islands (UHIs), led by Dr Jingxia Wang. The project integrates UAV-based thermal imaging with geospatial visualisation tools to understand microclimatic variations on the University of Sheffield campus. The role will include support with field-based UAV surveys, environmental sensor data collection, and geospatial modelling using 3D digital tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with UAV-based thermal surveys and mobile environmental sensor deployment.
- Support spatial data processing, mapping, and visualisation in ArcGIS Pro and related software.
- Contribute to the creation of a 3D digital twin of the campus to simulate urban heat distribution and environmental scenarios.
- Work closely with the project investigator to analyse and interpret data and assist with results dissemination.
Person Specification
- Background in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Interest in Digital Twins, drones and sensors, urban environments, sustainability, and applied digital methods.
- Familiarity with geospatial data and 3D geovisualisation tools, especially ArcGIS Pro.
- Experience with UAV fieldwork or working with environmental sensors is a strong asset.
- Willingness to learn new skills in spatial analytics and urban visualisation.
- Strong attention to detail, teamwork skills, and ability to work independently.
- Remote, with only 2 weeks in July on campus fieldwork is required
- Possibility of extension beyond the summer (part-time)
Total Hours
7 hours per week and flexibility – to be agreed with the successful candidate based on availability and project needs.
Pay: £17.34 per hour plus holiday entitlement.
