About The Role

Are you passionate about the arts and looking to build a career in marketing and communications? We’re recruiting a Communications Assistant to support the promotion of this year’s Off the Shelf Festival of Words.

The University of Sheffield’s Off the Shelf festival is one of the largest literary festivals in the North of England, bringing the best in local, national and international literary talent to Sheffield for over 30 years. The festival is supported by the Communications Team within the University’s Research, Partnerships and Innovation division, working closely with the festival delivery team in the City, Culture and Public Engagement department.  

We are recruiting a Communications Assistant to support the promotion of this year’s festival to the wider public. The primary focus of the role will be on social media, but the successful candidate will provide wider marketing and communications support leading up to and during the festival in October. As part of the role, the successful candidate will be expected to bring their ideas and creativity to help grow the Festival’s student audience through various channels, networks and by working with student societies and other relevant interest groups. 

Required Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in image/ graphic editing, preferably using Canva and/or other editing tools including the Adobe Creative Cloud suite,
  • Experience using Instagram, Facebook, Twitter - understanding the nuances of each platform and the target audiences.  
  • Ability to work creatively with the confidence to put your ideas into action, using your own initiative.
  • Ability to manage your time effectively and work to tight deadlines on a range of competing projects.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to work.

 Desired skills:

  • Experience using content management systems.
  • An interest in festival or arts Marketing and Communications
  • Event assistance experience useful but not essential 

 

Supervision Arrangements

The post holder will be supervised and guided by the Communications Officer on Tuesday - Thursdays but will also work closely alongside the Off The Shelf programming team.  Whilst supervision will only be available Tuesday - Thursday, working days are flexible once the post holder is in place and festival pre-promotion is underway.

The post holder will work closely alongside the Communications Officer but will be expected to manage their ongoing tasks independently. Weekly review meetings will take place to review both project progression and pastoral side of supervision.  The post holder will be office based and both desk resources and PC access, and access to appropriate software is available.

Hours: 16 hours per week

Duration: 05/08/2024 - 15/11/2024

Pay Rate: £12.99 per hour + holiday pay entitlement
