HMRC Hoax Phone Calls

We are aware of students who have received scam calls from fraudsters claiming to be representatives of the HMRC. The calls we are aware of include an automated message which asks the victim to press 1 in order to be connected to HMRC. A recorded message then informs the victim that unless they pay money owed immediately, they will be arrested by police.

It is important to remember that police officers and HRMC will NEVER call you and ask you to settle the balance of a tax bill over the phone.

If you receive this call, please hang up immediately and block the number. If you receive this, or any other suspicious call, do not give any information over the phone.

Here is how you can report a suspicious / scam call:

  • Call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040
  • Contact the company who the fraudster claims to be directly. In this instance, HMRC at [email protected]
